This famous Nagma by Abdul Hai aka Sahir Ludhianvi, a well-known personality of Hindustan Progressive Poetry and Cinema, does not fail to leave a deep impression on the hearts and minds of the listeners even after decades.

Introduction

The word Sahir means magician, which seems to be an accurate pen name because the world of Sahir’s poetry is actually full of different types of magic. Sahir’s words are like a hole in the darkness.

His poetry is an offering of many colors at once. His poetry not only smells of romanticism but also of political rebellion and revolution, in which there is a declaration of rebellion, especially of farmers and workers.

His style A Bayan makes his poetry stand apart from the rest of the poets. His poetry has a great impact on his caste experiences and feelings. Rather, his entire writing rests on the foundation of life’s experiences and shiddat-e-realization.

childhood

Sahir was born on 8 March 1921 in a wealthy vassal family in Ludhiana. His father Chaudhary Fazal Muhammad was one of the famous personalities of Ludhiana. Sahir was the eleventh child of Choudhary Saheb but was born as his first child with the intelligent wife Sardar Begum, who was Sahir’s mother.

After the birth of Sahir, his mother told his father to give shape to that nameless relationship so that there would be no quarrel over inheritance in the future, but his father did not like this. In such a situation, his mother broke away from her husband and started living separately.

Long legal proceedings ensued over Sahir’s delivery and he was finally handed over to his mother. Sahir was brought up by his maternal grandmother.

Education

School

He completed his early education at Malwa Khalisa School, Ludhiana.

At that time Ludhiana used to be a well-known center of Urdu adabiyat, as a result, Sahir started getting interested in poetry while reaching his matriculation and he started calling him Sher at an early age.

College

In 1939, he joined the Government College, Ludhiana. Wherever he reached he got attracted to the communist movement. On the one hand, due to the bad conditions of the country, the fire of rebellion started burning within them, on the other hand, they could not save themselves even from falling into the grip of Aatish-e-Mohabbat.

B.A. In the last year of the year, one of his classmates fell in love with Ishar Kaur and took her to the college, Senika. He did a BA from college. He could not do it, but that first touch of love made him a beautiful romantic poet.

Career

His first collection “Talkhiyaan” was published in 1944 and was well received. After leaving college, he went to Lahore and was admitted to Dayal Singh College but was expelled from there due to his harsh political attitude. As a result, Sahir’s mind got bored with his studies.

After college, he became the editor of the famous literary magazine of that time “Adab-e-Latif”. Later he also edited “Savera” and his literary magazine “Shahkar”. At the same time, a friend of his college called Sahir to write a song for one of his films “Azadi Ki Raah Par” and Sahir moved to Bombay.

And this is where Sahir’s film journey started. Although that film did not work, Sahir managed to make his mark as a lyricist.

Sahir brought admiration and film songs on the same level, it was only Sahir that the film industry made him sit head-eyes despite his refusal to drop his laurels. Hot passion and a rebellious attitude were always in his blood. He knew very well to fight for his right and get the right by fighting.

In that era, he had single-handedly opened a front against the film industry to get the lyricists their due. As a result, many musicians distanced themselves from him, but the industry once again succumbed to the power and popularity of his pen, and eventually, the name of the lyricist along with the music came to the fore.

love life

Despite being born into a wealthy family, Sahir’s childhood and youth passed in very difficult conditions, which had an impact on his personality and poetry throughout his life. Their love affairs also became the subject of discussion.

There was a lot of discussion about his love for Amrita Pritam and Sudha Malhotra. He used to live with his mother in Mumbai, for him there was nothing more than his mother and perhaps this was the reason why none of his love affairs could reach marriage and he did not marry for life.

His love affair with Amrita Pritam was very romantic. Amrita was enamored of him despite being married. Amrita writes about Sahir in her autobiography Rasidi Ticket.

When Sahir met her and went back after throwing away the cigarettes, she would pick the parts of her extinguished cigarettes from the ashtray and put them on her lips again after lighting them. Sahir, on the other hand, would keep the cup of tea from Amrita’s lips on his shelf without washing it. After Amrita, his relationship with singer Sudha Malhotra went and went well.
